Everyone is a good day! Masha, the sound designer of the HotCroutons indie code again, is in touch. Today we will talk about the other side of our Arena-Shuther I, toaster, which we created as part of a monthly practice in the Gamebox game studio.

Once again I want to roll back a few months ago and remember how my immersion in a global technique occurred. After all, without completely plunged into this technological abyss of the future, you can’t cook musical porridge. And this is exactly what I want to pay the reader’s attention to – to sounds in our game.

Today I hope to draw your attention to the use of individual actions in our shooter, that is, the direct details of the sound design.

Sound design (sound design) is a process of determining, controlling or creating sound-noise effects. Separate sounds revive the game, perfectly complementing the visual. We do not want to run silently and shoot at enemies to steep music, even with endless cartridges? With the same success, one could simply turn on something from Doom on the background!

Our cute rebellious hero

Probably, the most interesting thing was for me to work on the sound of getting damage by a hero in the enemy lair. Just in this process, I mastered an audio effect called Vocoder.

Vocoder is an effect that combines the frequency information of one sound signal (the so -called carrier) with an amplitude contour of another signal (the so -called modulator). In other words, Robots say through this.

When I sent the gam designer the sound of the robot (well, you know, like the transformers, when they reincarnate), mixed with the sound of metal (directly the sound of a blow to the toaster case), it did not pass the check. We wanted Toster to attract attention not just like a robot – so we decided to make it a little nicer. And so that he is perceived by players as an “animated” creation of rebellious household appliances in the world, we gave him a voice.

In fact, I crossed the toaster a little of the derivatives of my own vocal cords. I wrote a couple of “oh” and “ay” into the microphone (actually twenty) and chose three leaders from them.

Of course, we could not use my voice just my voice. Just imagine: a cartoon metal toaster, with a machine gun and a rocket launcher at the ready, who is in the voice of a 25-year-old girl. It sounds absurd! At least the “Toster’s Voice” Voice had to be made higher, since it is a small object. Therefore, I boldly increased the pitch of my voice suffering by about 8-9 halts so that the sound was unnaturally high.

Then the same Vocoder came to the rescue. Having played with him for some time, I achieved the necessary “refracting” voice, which we usually hear in the robots in cartoons. Remember at least the Wall-E cartoon. By the way, as a reference, when creating the very concept of the main character, we were the famous cute robot paper. True, he is a darling?

And that’s what we got in the end (I apply all three options for sounds that are played alternately in our game).

Another cool sound from our game is the sound of the bread. After pumping abilities and a pair of three expenses earned by blood and then microcircuits, it retrays in the rocket launcher. I like the sound of a rocket launcher because, against the backdrop of spectacular battle and colorful explosions, it resembles a small fireworks. At the same time, not so bright audio-explosion was conceived. In general, the sound was created taking into account the fact that when using the skill of the rocket launcher, several missiles fly out at once, respectively, the sound is duplicated.

And, of course, do not forget about the sounds of our menu! Working out the sounds of buttons, it is usually difficult to come up with something original. But we had an excellent landmark in the form of a whole mechanism that rings, clicks and buzzes: which, of course, can not be said about modern toasters that produce their work as quietly as possible – and as if they are already equipped with artificial intellect.

In our command head, the main character was to turn out to be more exaggerated, so we used the “toaster” sound to the maximum. For example, if you go to any section on the menu, whether it is the choice of one of the three levels of complexity or line of the rating, we will hear the sound of the nomination box for bread crumbs. And if we go back to the main menu, we will hear, on the contrary, the sound of closing this very box. Thus, we tried to create the feeling that, digging in the menu, you seem to delve into the body of the toaster itself .
